Business Challenge
Offloading ERP reporting without rewriting hundreds of reports
The customer depended on SQL Server stored procedures, views, and functions distributed across multiple ERP-related databases. Reporting required near-real-time freshness, while deeply nested SQL objects and cross-database references made a direct migration complex.
More than 200 candidate tables were identified. The primary question was whether Fabric could support the existing report-serving architecture without impacting production systems or forcing a wholesale rewrite of established business logic.
Solution Approach
Report-first migration with incremental onboarding
The delivery team established a repeatable Fabric foundation, implemented mirrored database patterns across ERP-related sources, recreated report-serving logic in Fabric Warehouse, and validated the approach in staged batches.
Mirrored source databases
Replicate source data into Fabric while preserving the near-real-time reporting requirement.
Warehouse report-serving layer
Recreate the reporting logic inside Fabric Warehouse rather than forcing an immediate report rewrite.
Workspace architecture
Establish DEV, QA, and PROD boundaries to support controlled promotion and validation.
Incremental batching
Onboard large table sets in staged batches to simplify validation, troubleshooting, and capacity planning.
Compatibility and Design
Preserving business logic while adapting to Fabric
The implementation validated Fabric migration tooling across copy activities, stored procedure orchestration, metadata-driven pipelines, Dataflows Gen2, and enterprise warehouse loads.
Unsupported SQL constructs and platform compatibility gaps were documented with mitigation approaches. Where direct translation was not possible, the logic was redesigned around Fabric Warehouse capabilities while preserving the intended reporting behavior.
Strategic Value
A repeatable pattern for future ERP reporting migrations
The engagement established more than a working migration. It created a reusable implementation pattern that can support future ERP reporting waves, improve governance, reduce dependency on production SQL infrastructure, and provide a path toward simpler orchestration and more direct Delta-based ingestion.
