Customer Challenge
Migrating a complex integration estate while protecting continuity
The customer operated a large data integration estate supporting multiple mining operations and source systems. The existing environment included hundreds of Azure Data Factory pipelines, metadata-driven ingestion frameworks, operational sources, staging and enterprise warehouse layers, stored procedures, and complex transformation logic.
The initial migration focused on a representative mine site and needed to answer whether Microsoft Fabric could support the current architecture, how existing ADF assets could be migrated, what platform-specific constraints would emerge, and how the approach could scale to future sites and migration waves.
Solution Approach
Lift and shift first, modernize with evidence
The team adopted a phased strategy that preserved existing business logic before pursuing deeper modernization. The project migrated representative workloads, validated Fabric compatibility, identified required refactoring, and documented repeatable patterns for future delivery.
Pipeline and dataflow conversion
Convert representative orchestration and Dataflows Gen2 workloads while maintaining the intended processing behavior.
Metadata-driven ingestion
Implement reusable configuration-driven ingestion patterns rather than hard-coding each source onboarding path.
Stored procedure migration
Adapt existing transformation logic to Fabric warehouse capabilities and document platform-specific changes.
End-to-end validation
Use reconciliation and validation procedures to compare source, staging, warehouse, and consumption outcomes.
Platform Architecture
A hybrid Fabric pattern for compatibility and evolution
The implementation established a layered architecture that balanced near-term workload compatibility with a path toward more modern Delta-based patterns.
Bronze Lakehouse
Raw ingestion and landing capabilities.
Bronze Warehouse
Configuration-driven processing and ingestion control.
Silver Warehouse
Staging and enterprise data modeling.
Gold Warehouse
Reporting and business consumption.
Business Value Delivered
Turning a scoped migration into a reusable modernization capability
Reduced future risk
A tested reference implementation for future Fabric migration decisions.
Reusable factory assets
Repeatable procedures, validation methods, and implementation guidance.
Faster modernization
A path toward direct-to-Delta ingestion, simpler orchestration, and better governance.
Shared architecture clarity
A common reference point for customer teams, architects, and future delivery waves.
Customer and delivery-partner names are not disclosed. The case study describes the migration-factory approach and documented capabilities rather than independently verified production metrics.
